AD-HOC COMMITTEE UNCOVERS ALLEGED CONTRACT INFLATION IN ROAD PROJECT
In a compelling turn of events, the House of Representatives' Ad-hoc Committee has been conducting an exhaustive inquiry into the Ijebu-Igbo-Ita-Ibadan Road project, revealing shocking allegations of contract inflation. Led by Rt. Hon. Kwamoti Bitrus Laori, this committee includes Hon. Aliyu Mustapha Abdullahi, representing Ikara/Kubau Federal Constituency, Kaduna state, who has actively attended and participated in the meetings.
DC Engineering Limited, the construction company entrusted with the road project, dropped a bombshell during these hearings, accusing officials of the Federal Ministry of Works, particularly under the tenure of former Minister Babatunde Fashola, of inflating the contract cost from an initial N9.8 billion to an astounding N54.3 billion.
This revelation brings into focus a project that had been mired in controversy and delays for over five years. Originally slated for completion within two years, the project's progress was hampered by a slow release of funds, stretching its timeline from 2018 to 2023.
DC Engineering Ltd, in a bid to address the rising material costs and funding gaps, had sought a contract sum review to at least N14 billion, but their request was denied by the Ministry of Works. The astonishing twist came when the same ministry, which had refused the review, subsequently re-awarded the contract to AREATECH Construction Ltd for N54.3 billion without terminating DC Engineering Ltd's contract.
The Ad-hoc Committee's investigation, aided by Hon. Aliyu Mustapha Abdullahi's active involvement, is now tasked with unraveling the truth behind these allegations. Their findings hold the potential to bring much-needed transparency and accountability to government-funded infrastructure projects like the Ijebu-Igbo-Ita-Ibadan Road.
In a time when public resources must be used judiciously, the diligent efforts of this committee underscore the importance of upholding the highest standards of governance, ensuring that taxpayer funds are efficiently allocated and that justice prevails in matters of public interest.
